A Long Wait

The Bears gave up their 2020 third-round pick in the Khalil Mack deal, and they traded a fourth-round pick this year to the New England Patriots when they moved up to take running back David Montgomery last year. Montgomery looks to be a keeper, so the early returns on the latter move are good. The pick they sent to the Jaguars for Foles was a compensatory pick (140th overall).

As it currently stands, Chicago have no picks in the third and fourth round and will not go on the clock for 113 picks. That’s going to be essentially three full rounds of selections. That may mean reaching for someone, or addressing a certain position in the second round on the fear the pickings will get slim at that spot later. For general manager Ryan Pace, who has to nail this draft, that’s not a good position to be in. So it’s worth wondering if he’ll willing cede future picks to get back in the game on Day 2, and thus give himself more chances.
