Fantasy football 2020 AFC South depth charts and breakout players
By Bill Pivetz
QB: Deshaun Watson
RBs: David Johnson, Duke Johnson
WRs: Brandin Cooks, Will Fuller, Randall Cobb
TEs: Darren Fells
The Texans have had a busy offseason, making a huge trade about a month ago. They attempted to fill that void by making another trade but what they got in return doesn’t have the same value. They have a good chance of finishing third or fourth in the division.
Watson saw a tiny bit of regression last season, throwing for 3,852 yards, 26 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. The yards, interceptions and completion percentage were all worse than his 2018 season. Though, he helped fantasy football owners with his rushing numbers, 413 yards and seven touchdowns.
The first big trade the Texans made was swapping DeAndre Hopkins and picks for Johnson and picks (full trade details here). Johnson has played in all 16 games twice in his five years. Last year, he played in 13 games for Arizona, carrying the ball just 94 times for 345 and two touchdowns. However, with Carlos Hyde gone, Johnson becomes the lead back, as long as he can stay healthy. Duke Johnson will play a bigger role in the passing game, making him a solid PPR pick.
Losing Hopkins gives the other receivers more opportunities to put up points as Hopkins saw a lot of targets throughout the season. From 2016 to 2019, he averaged 160 targets and 98 receptions a year. Those will now be spread between Fuller, Cobb and newly acquired Cooks. Health is also a concern with all three of these receivers. Fuller has yet to play a full season. Cobb hasn’t played 16 games since 2014 and Cooks has a history of concussions. It’s hard to trust any of them this season.
Fells was targeted by Watson heavily in the red zone. He finished the year with 34 receptions, 341 yards and seven touchdowns. With the inconsistency they have at the wide receiver position, Fells may finish as a top-20 tight end this season. He’s my breakout player to target late in drafts.
