4. Washington Redskins

Amid a 3-13 campaign in 2019, it’s easy to overlook how the Redskins got nothing from the tight end position. Jordan Reed missed the entire season and was let go this offseason, leaving Jeremy Sprinkle (26 receptions for 241 yards) and the now-retired Vernon Davis (10 catches for 123 yards). They did not add much to the mix in free agency, signing Logan Thomas and Richard Rodgers.

The Redskins have a more general need for weapons in the passing game. Wide receiver Terry McLaurin showed well as a rookie last year, fellow rookie Steven Sims flashed potential late last year and running Chris Thompson continues to be productive when healthy (42 receptions last year). But that’s it, with a caveat of running back Derrius Guice’s possible untapped potential as a receiver.

For years in Carolina, Washington head coach Ron Rivera had one of the best tight ends in the league in Greg Olsen. Even if they draft one, there is room for an addition if there’s an opportunity.

The Redskins showed their shift in thinking via a dogged pursuit of Amari Cooper in free agency, and the NFC East looks ripe for the picking. Along with any commitment to see what Dwayne Haskins has, surrounding him with better weapons is obvious.

Howard needs a change of scenery badly, and Washington has a dire need at tight end. This doesn’t have to be hard.
