3 Non-QBs the Dolphins would be smart to take at No. 5
Derrick Brown, DL, Auburn
The Dolphins invested heavily in edge-rush talent in free agency, signing Emmanuel Ogbah and Shaq Lawson to contracts, but Miami lacks a dominant force on the interior of the defensive line.
South Carolina’s Javon Kinlaw is seen by many as the defensive tackle prospect with the most upside of any in the class.
Yet if the Dolphins are looking for an interior defender who can come and make an immediate and consistent impact, then former Auburn stud Brown may be a better bet.
The numbers may not be eye-popping, but Brown’s pedigree and ability to break into the backfield should not be in question. He had at least 9.5 tackles for loss in each of his final three seasons with Auburn, racking up 11.5 in 2019.
A Unanimous All-American and the SEC Defensive Player of the Year last season, Brown possesses the versatility to play any position on the defensive line regardless of the front being used.
That should allow him to effectively complement last year’s first-round pick Christian Wilkins as well as the edge-rushing duo of Ogbah and Lawson and give the Dolphins a significantly more dangerous front than they have presented opponents in recent times.
Quarterback may be the position of most significant concern to Dolphins fans. Yet, if the Dolphins are to enjoy long-term success, then they need to construct a formidable defense. Brown is a potential cornerstone who would help them do that.
