For as hyped as it was, this might be one of the most underrated 30 for 30s. Maybe it’s because Celtics/Lakers: Best of Enemies spans five hours over three parts, but if you’re feeling antsy waiting for the next eight episodes of a 10-part MJ documentary, there’s a very good chance this look at the 1980s rivalry between Magic Johnson‘s Los Angeles Lakers and Larry Bird‘s Boston Celtics will be right up your alley.

The dual narration structure can be a bit grating at times (mostly because Ice Cube’s Lakers homerism is insufferable and Donnie Wahlberg’s Bah-ston accent is all over the map), but it also makes it unique, giving both fanbases in this historic rivalry their time to revel in the victories and explain away the defeats.

Before Michael Jordan and the Bad Boys Detroit Pistons, it was Magic and Bird who put the NBA on the map. This extended look at the Celtics and Lakers dynasties of the ’80s appropriately lays the groundwork with the history of Bill Russell, Red Auerbach, Jerry West and Elgin Baylor before diving right into the epic Finals clashes between Bird and Magic that represented the dawn of a new era for the league.
