7. 2019: Claude Giroux‘s unexpected slapshot

Sure, Claude Giroux has had some incredible shootout moves in his hockey career that may deserve to be on this list above this one. Yes, I am biased as someone who watches Philadelphia Flyers games on a regular basis. And yes, hockey should 100 percent have more slapshot shootout attempts thanks to this.

This goal by Giroux is an innocuous one, to be sure, but the mere surprise of this shot by the Flyers captain is what puts this on the board due to its outside-the-box thinking. Slapshots are not usually in a player’s shootout repertoire, but Giroux went off the board in a near galaxy brain idea that somehow worked against Toronto Maple Leafs goaltender Frederik Andersen.

Is this the prettiest shootout attempt ever? Not by a long shot. However, Giroux went back to hockey basics with this shootout goal, and I have to give it to him because of the fact that it worked so brilliantly. It’s hard to say if this will really ever fool a goaltender like this again, considering Giroux pulled this move off so recently, but credit where credit is due for sure.
