4. Miami Dolphins

Draft Class

  • 1st round-QB Tua Tagovailoa (Alabama), OT Austin Jackson (USC), CB Noah Igbinoghene (Auburn)
  • 2nd round-OG Robert Hunt (Louisiana), DT Raekwon Davis (Alabama)
  • 3rd round-S Brandon Jones (Texas)
  • 4th round-OG Solomon Kindley (Georgia)
  • 5th round-DE Jason Strowbridge (North Carolina), DE Curtis Weaver (Boise State)
  • 6th round-LS Blake Ferguson (LSU)
  • 7th round-WR Malcolm Perry (Navy)

The Miami Dolphins entered 2019 with the unofficial mission of Tanking for Tua, and it looked dicey when they finished with the fifth overall pick. A hip injury helped, but Miami didn’t have to do anything as Tua Tagovailoa fell right into their laps at five.

Tagovailoa’s medicals are scary, but if he can stay healthy the Dolphins may finally have a franchise quarterback. Miami has wandered through the valley of darkness at the position since Dan Marino retired and that should end if they can keep Tagovailoa upright.

GM Chris Grier deserves credit for recognizing that fact and drafting three offensive linemen in the first four rounds to bolster Tagovailoa’s protection. Miami also got a good value in the fifth round with Boise State defensive end Curtis Weaver, a productive edge rusher who fell due to concerns over his speed.

This kind of haul in the draft will do wonders for the Dolphins, who had one of the thinnest rosters in football last season. Miami should be considerably better in 2020 and has an outside chance to contend for the AFC East crown now that Tom Brady is no longer a member of the Patriots.
