5. 1991-1992 Duke Blue Devils

It’s been a minute since we discussed Duke, but the Blue Devils are back on our list. This spot goes to arguably the greatest Duke team to take the floor, the 1991-92 Blue Devils.

That squad was coming off a national championship the year before when they toppled an undefeated UNLV team in the Final Four to win Mike Krzyzewski’s first championship. Duke entered the year looking to repeat as national champions, a feat that hadn’t been accomplished since UCLA did it back during the Wooden dynasty of the late 60s and early 70s.

It certainly helped that the core of the title-winning squad was back for another run at glory, including Christian Laettner, Grant Hill and Bobby Hurley. Duke cruised to a 25-2 mark in the regular season and swept the ACC Tournament to enter the NCAA Tournament on fire.

The selection committee gave the Blue Devils a top seed, but it wasn’t easy for Duke, which survived an overtime thriller in the regional final against Kentucky when Laettner hit his famous game-winner. A win over Indiana at the Final Four set the stage for a title game matchup against Michigan’s Fab Five and future NBA stars like Chris Webber, Jalen Rose and Juwan Howard.

Duke’s experience won the day as the Blue Devils beat the Wolverines by 20 to claim their second straight title. No team duplicated that feat for 15 years, a mark to the strength of that Blue Devils’ team.
