2021 NFL Draft: 5 teams that are perfect fits for Ohio State’s Justin Fields
By John Buhler
What if, just maybe, the New England Patriots find a way to replace Tom Brady with Fields with only a one-year gap between them? New England is apparently going with Jarrett Stidham and Brian Hoyer backing him up. Though they won’t be a total grease fire of a team because that defense is legit, New England isn’t contending for Super Bowls any more as is.
This is where adding a player like Fields in the 2021 NFL Draft can make all the difference. Should the Patriots be perpetually quagmired by horrendous quarterback play next year, maybe the go 6-10 or even 5-11? That would have them picking in the top 10 in next year’s draft, right in the area where drafting Fields is possible. New England also has a ton of assets to possibly trade up.
One could argue Fields will need to bide his time and wait to start. Even though he didn’t beat out Jake Fromm as a true freshman at Georgia, he went into Columbus fired up and dominated for the Buckeyes right from the jump. He was a Heisman finalist last year and anything short of another invite to New York in December would be a disappointment for him.
Fields is the type of quarterback Belichick will want to keep coaching into his late 70s. If Belichick doesn’t want to go that long, Fields is still the quarterbacking talent offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels would want to stay around for and eventually replace a retired Belichick. Fields not only makes the Patriots relevant again but makes them a viable threat in a new world of an AFC.
