4. Mario Addison

Jordan Phillips led the Bills in sacks last season with 9.5 but he bolted for Arizona in free agency. Buffalo filled his spot on the defensive line with a player Mario Addison.

McDermott and his defensive coaching staff are very comfortable with Addison since he’s coming from the Panthers. He joins several other defensive players who have made the move from North Carolina to Upstate New York. Addison’s job on this defense is going to be to rush the passer at every opportunity.

It might be a little unfair to call Addison a one trick pony, but rushing the passer is his only  plus skill. He needs to produce double-digits sacks to justify his place in the starting lineup. Fortunately, he has the quickness and bend off the edge to make that happen in McDermott’s scheme.

The blueprint for success for the Bills this season will be to get out to leads and protect them with their running game and stingy defense. Addison has to be a menace for opposing quarterbacks when they’re trying to make plays in the passing game. He may not be a long-term solution for the team’s issues at edge rusher, but he should produce solid results in 2020.
