4. Josh Johnson

Before week two of last season, New York Jets quarterback, Sam Darnold went down with mono. During that time, Trevor Siemian and Luke Falk filled in and led the Jets to an 0-3 record. During that three-game stretch the Jets were outscored by their opponents 84-23. To make things worse, 14 of those 23 points were scored by the defense and special teams.

The team decided to address this issue in the fourth round of the 2020 NFL draft by selecting FIU quarterback, James Morgan. Earlier in the offseason, the Jets also brought back former Dolphin David Fales. Fales is supposed to bring that veteran presence who in a pinch could be the next man up if Darnold were to go down again. The problem is, since 2014, Fales has only thrown 48 career passes. With Morgan needing time to develop and adjust to the NFL game, a veteran like Josh Johnson makes perfect sense.

Johnson is coming off a five-week stint with the LA Wildcats of the XFL. In that time, Johnson was impressive, with an 11-2 TD/INT ratio and 106.3 rating, best in the league. In his time before that, Johnson was the definition of journeyman quarterback. Over the course of 10 years, he was part of fourteen different locker rooms.

After a successful run as the starting quarterback for the Wildcats, Johnson proved that his best football is ahead of him. With all of his experience, he would fit well as this year’s number two man as the team spends the year grooming Morgan.
