15. Minnesota Golden Gophers

Head coach P.J. Fleck proved last year that he can build a possible College Football Playoff contender as the Golden Gophers went 11-2 and topped Auburn in the Outback Bowl. Now the task will be proving he can do it consistently as he deals with a ton of departures. He’ll hand his hat on the quarterback-wide receiver duo of Tanner Morgan and Rashod Bateman to lead the way.

14. Texas Longhorns

No matter where you place Tom Herman‘s Longhorns in the college football rankings, it’s going to feel uncomfortable. Texas was supposed to be back last year but started out 6-5 overall. Yet they finished strong, including a big bowl win over Utah, and get quarterback Sam Ehlinger back. With some strong defensive talent, maybe the Longhorns can finally get things on track in Austin.

13. Wisconsin Badgers

Under the watch of head coach Paul Chryst, Wisconsin has proven to be the powerhouse in the Big Ten West. Of course, they’ve rarely had to replace a player like running back Jonathan Taylor while also replenishing the defense of key losses as well. Still, if either Jack Coan or Graham Mertz can step up at quarterback, the Badgers should keep on humming.

12. USC Trojans

Though it could very easily come back to bite me, I’m buying all of the USC stock in the 2020 offseason. When healthy, Kedon Slovis looked like an absolute stud and the talent at the skill positions around him makes up one of the richest groups in the country. If the offensive line and defense are even serviceable, the Trojans could be a real dark horse this season.

11. Notre Dame Fighting Irish

Notre Dame is often criticized for its schedule as an independent team but that won’t be the case in 2020. Not only do they start the season in Dublin, Ireland but they also play Wisconsin in Green Bay and have dates with Clemson and USC. Still, Ian Book is back behind one of the best offensive lines in the country and a defense that should be bolstered by a strong front seven.
