FORT MYERS, FLORIDA – FEBRUARY 29: Eduardo Rodriguez #57 of the Boston Red Sox delivers a pitch against the New York Yankees during the second inning of a Grapefruit League spring training game at JetBlue Park at Fenway South on February 29, 2020 in Fort Myers, Florida. 2020 Bpston Red Sox projected starting rotation

Eduardo Rodriguez, LHP (19-6, 3.81 ERA, 1.33 WHIP, 213 K in 203.1 IP)
Nathan Eovaldi, RHP (2-1, 5.99 ERA, 1.58 WHIP, 70 K in 67.2 IP)
Martin Perez, LHP (10-7, 5.12 ERA, 1.52 WHIP, 135 K in 165.1 IP with MIN)
Ryan Weber, RHP (2-4, 5.09 ERA, 1.38 WHIP, 29 K in 40.2 IP)
Brian Johnson, LHP (1-3, 6.02 ERA, 1.88 WHIP, 31 K in 40.1 IP)
Brandon Workman, RHP (10-1, 1.88 ERA, 1.03 WHIP, 104 K in 71.2 IP, 16/22 saves)

If you dive in past Eduardo you are either really desperate or in a 20-team league. This rotation is hot garbage. Rodriguez is a solid middle of your rotation fantasy starter, but he’s reached his ceiling. The ERA will remain near 4 and he’s likely not winning 19 games again. That WHIP is awfully high as well.

Eovaldi is worth considering in deeper leagues, but he couldn’t even crack the Boston rotation last year. He has great strikeout potential, but the ERA and WHIP can kill you.

This is probably the last shot for Brian Johnson. He has had potential for years, but never been able to bring it all together. If he or Perez have a cake matchup, you can try them, but I’d still be leery.

Workman wasn’t the closer for all of last year, but he dominated no matter where he was. Workman has great peripheral numbers and has a legit shot at 30 saves.

Prospects to watch:

I wouldn’t be shocked if Tanner Houck started the season in the rotation for Boston considering the weakness at the back. The loss of Sale really hurt. Houck may be the right-handed version of Sale. His delivery isn’t quite as quirky, but the arm slot has thrown hitters off in the minors. Houck is worth a look late in drafts.

Bryan Mata was the youngest guy at the Futures Game last year, but the chances of him winding up on the Boston roster are pretty slim with the way this season is going to go. He has a live arm, but he’s still wild. Make him prove it in standard leagues, but he should be on every dynasty radar.
