5 quarterbacks who are making way too much money
Jacoby Brissett, Indianapolis Colts
When the Colts initially got Brissett on their roster, they thought they had a young player with upside. Then Andrew Luck retired and suddenly he was in charge of leading the offense. In 2019, Brissett threw only 18 touchdowns. Game-manager stats.
This season, Brissett is going to make $21.3 million, and he won’t be the starter. The Colts have instead brought in Philip Rivers to lead. Brissett is going to make starter money to simply attend meetings, run a scout offense, and hold a Microsoft tablet on the sidelines. That is an insane amount of coin to have invested in a backup quarterback.
“The jury is still out,” Colts general manager Chris Ballard said during his season-ending news conference (January 30th). “That’s why we did the short-term deal with Jacoby. One, to give us some security that we had a player we knew we liked and could go forward with. But also, two, to give us time to figure out if he is the guy or not.”
More recently, the Colts selected Jacob Eason from the University of Washington in the NFL Draft. That means Brissett could come out of camp as the No. 3 quarterback on the Indianapolis depth chart. He may end up even being released. It’s a peculiar and uneasy situation for the Colts and the quarterback position right now.
Head coach Frank Reich and general manager Chris Ballard will have to figure out how to best handle the situation and what moves to make before the first kickoff of the season.
