Andy Dalton, Dallas Cowboys

Jerry Jones and the Dallas Cowboys love to make questionable roster decisions, and Dalton is another head-scratcher. He will make $7 million as a backup, and he isn’t really needed in Dallas. This is likely more of a move to show Dak Prescott they need a commitment or a better season to lock him in for the future. A high price to pay for no real competition, though.

Dalton will likely be great in meetings and in practice for the Cowboys, but there were cheaper options to fill that role. Cam Newton still remains un-signed and he could have been a better option. Blake Bortles, Joe Flacco, Josh McCown, and Matt Moore are also all still available and would be servicable backups for Prescott. They all would have probably taken less than $3 million.

In 2019, Dalton went 2-11 with 16 touchdowns and 14 interceptions for the Cincinnati Bengals. He is nearing the end of his career and it wouldn’t have been surprising to see him go completely unsigned heading into the summer. Of course, Jones had to jump in and overpay for his services.

“I believe Jerry Jones got into the ear of Andy Dalton. I believe that somehow, someway, he all but promised Andy Dalton he was going to get some playing time this year in Dallas,” Skip Bayless said recently on Undisputed.

If Dalton does become the starter, the price tag is worth it, but the current base salary is too high for an aging backup quarterback.
