Green Bay Packers: at San Francisco 49ers

Year one of the Matt LaFleur era was a pretty good one for Green Bay. In LaFleur’s first year at the helm, the Packers went 13-3, won the NFC North and a home playoff game before falling in the NFC Championship game.

The problem was that two of Green Bay’s four losses (counting postseason) on the year came to the same team: the San Francisco 49ers. The Packers had extreme difficulty dealing with the 49ers, who blew out Green Bay twice on their way to Super Bowl LIV.

There were two primary issues for the Packers in those matchups: poor performance on the offensive line and a lack of secondary options in the passing game for Aaron Rodgers. Green Bay took a flier on Devin Funchess to try and fill a hole at wide receiver but the offensive line suffered a downgrade when Bryan Bulaga left in free agency.

The schedule does provide a third shot at the 49ers for Green Bay in the past year and a half, with the matchup coming once again at Levi’s Stadium. It is important for the Packers to win not only for tiebreaker purposes but also to avoid a mental block forming against the 49ers.

If San Francisco is able to beat Green Bay badly for the third time it will start to create self-doubt within the Packers’ locker room on their ability to top the 49ers. That is a massive issue and Green Bay has to find a way to top San Francisco simply to bolster their own collective psyche.
