Indianapolis Colts: vs. Houston Texans

The AFC South should be a fascinating division in 2020 with the potential of a three-team race. Houston and Tennessee both made the playoffs last season, but it looked like the Indianapolis Colts had serious playoff potential for a while.

The Colts were left rattled by Andrew Luck’s sudden retirement at the end of the preseason, but Jacoby Brissett stepped up to play well early on. Indianapolis was right in the thick of the wild card hunt before injuries and poor performance from Brissett sank their hopes.

GM Chris Ballard has done a fantastic job re-tooling the Indianapolis roster this offseason, importing Philip Rivers to stabilize the quarterback position and flipping his first-round pick to add DeForest Buckner on the defensive line. The Colts have followed up those marquee moves with a string of solid moves to fill holes on the roster, such as the addition of Xavier Rhodes on a one-year deal to bolster the secondary.

This strong offseason has put Indianapolis back in position to win their division, and in order to do that they will need to take down the reigning champs. That would be the Texans, who split the season series with the Colts a year ago, with each squad winning on its home field.

There is no question that the Texans have gotten worse, so the gap between the two teams has significantly shrunk. The Colts have to find a way to top the Texans now in order to give themselves the best chance to return to the postseason.
