5 NFL players who will become sophomore sensations
By John Buhler
There is so much Mississippi football on here, it’s ridiculous. It wasn’t by design, but we’re going to talk about a former Ole Miss Rebel who really made his mark in the second half of last season. Tennessee Titans wide receiver A.J. Brown demonstrated during his team’s remarkable run to the AFC Championship game that he might be the best wide receiver in his draft class.
Brown had 52 catches for 1,051 yards and eight touchdowns during his rookie season with the Titans. Keep in mind Tennessee underwent a massive change at quarterback mid-season, as the Titans opted to go with Ryan Tannehill over former No. 2 overall pick Marcus Mariota. Tannehill re-signed on a multi-year deal, while Mariota begins a new chapter of his NFL career in Las Vegas.
The rapport we saw between Tannehill and Brown was undeniable. Add in the unbelievable season out of bell-cow back Derrick Henry, and you could not have asked for a better first year as a coordinator out of Arthur Smith. And this is precisely why Brown is poised to become a superstar in this league this fall. Smith knows exactly what he’s got to work with offensively.
Sure, there are other wide receivers from this 2019 draft class who have signs of stardom within them. Mecole Hardman will progress as a receiver under Andy Reid in Kansas City. Russell Wilson will make Brown’s college teammate D.K. Metcalf better in year two in Seattle. Even Terry McLaurin has something good going for him in D.C. However, our best bet has to be on Brown.
