Top candidates for ESPN’s next Monday Night Football broadcast booth
By Jake Starr
Kevin Harlan and Kurt Warner
This one would be the easiest transition to make, as Kevin Harlan and Kurt Warner currently call Monday Night Football for Westwood One Radio. The duo also calls the Super Bowl for the station, so they have tons of experience working big games.
Harlan is one of the bests in the sport, and has tons of experience working different sports. He works NFL and college basketball for CBS, NBA for TNT, in addition to his NFL work on Westwood One. In total, Harlan has called 11 Super Bowls and five Final Fours.
Warner is a pro-football Hall of Famer and has made a seamless transition from the field into the broadcast booth. In addition to Westwood One, Warner does a lot of analysis work for NFL Network.
The big question is, would Warner and Harlan have to leave their roles with NFL Network and CBS/TNT respectively if they are to take the Monday Night Football job? Harlan has no issue working NFL for CBS on Sunday and Monday Night Football the following night, so it is already known the transition wouldn’t be an issue for him.
Would he be allowed to join ESPN would be the big question. It has to be assumed Harlan would not want to leave TNT and CBS, so that would be a big stone to turn to make this possible. The same thing could be said with Warner and NFL Network .
These two may perhaps be the best candidates for the job, but there would certainly be a lot of obstacles for them to get it. It remains to be seen who the new voices of Monday Night Football will be in 2020, but one thing is for sure, and that is there are plenty of fantastic options out there.
