If Russell Wilson ever leaves the Seahawks, it’ll be for 1 of these 5 teams
3. Dallas Cowboys
As the Cowboys and Dak Prescott continue a back and forth in contract talks, and the team tries to control the narrative in the media, there’s an increasing likelihood he takes the Kirk Cousins route and plays on the franchise tag this year and perhaps next. The Cowboys could rescind the tender yet this offseason, but that is very unlikely and Stephen Jones has said that’s not an option.
If Prescott plays out two years on the franchise tag, there’s no way Dallas puts the tag on him a third time in 2022. Letting him hit the open market, just like the Redskins did with Cousins in 2018, is the only option absent a multi-year deal. Trading for Wilson and his $37 million cap hit in 2022 would be significantly cheaper than the third franchise tag for Prescott. By the time 2023 comes, a $39 million cap hit might be down the totem pole for cap hits among quarterbacks by more than a few.
As Dallas tries to devalue Prescott and profess that paying a quarterback too much goes against the grain of winning, they are putting themselves in the market for a new quarterback in 2022 (if not sooner). Paying the wrong quarterback a lot of money is really what hampers winning. If Prescott is someone not deemed to be worthy of a long-term commitment, a path would be paved for Wilson to land in Dallas in a couple of years.
