If Russell Wilson ever leaves the Seahawks, it’ll be for 1 of these 5 teams
1. New Orleans Saints
Drew Brees may or may not retire after the 2020 season, with a broadcasting job waiting for him whenever he does call it quits. The idea Taysom Hill will be his successor is high-level hearsay, albeit with a bit of inside hearsay from Saints head coach Sean Payton, but there’s no tangible proof Hill is anything more than a high-end gadget player.
The Saints took a flier on Jameis Winston this offseason, and he would step in if Brees were injured for a chunk of games as he was last year. That seems to say it all about Hill as a pure quarterback, even if this year is a year where he could develop his skills in a more focused way with an eye on taking over for Brees in 2021.
Assuming Brees retires after the coming season, Hill or Winston might get a shot to take over as the starter next year. But it’s hard to point to either as a multi-year solution and if Winston gets a chance to play this year he could take the Teddy Bridgewater path to a multi-year deal with another team in free agency.
No matter how things look in the Saints’ quarterback room a year from now, presumably with at least one of Brees, Winston or Hill still around, Wilson will be a potential option looking toward 2022.
In New Orleans post-Brees, a new starting quarterback would find one of the best offensive minds in the game in Payton. Beyond that, a great set of weapons, and an offense that won’t actively take the ball out of his hands in the name of establishing the run, is a particularly intriguing possibility for Wilson.
