5 NFL teams who are instant contenders with Trevor Lawrence
By John Buhler
If the Chicago Bears were to end up with Trevor Lawrence, it would be the greatest thing to happen to Chicago sports since the Cubs won the World Series. It would be the like the Bears got the quarterback version of Walter Payton or Dick Butkus on their team. As long as the organization doesn’t fail him, he can be the 21st century version of Michael Jordan in Chicagoland.
The Bears have an excellent coaching staff with Matt Nagy as head coach, Bill Lazor as offensive coordinator and Chuck Pagano as defensive coordinator. Though general manager Ryan Pace cannot be trusted whatsoever in any capacity to draft a quarterback, just get somebody else to do it and take Lawrence No. 1 overall if you have the opportunity to trade up to get him.
Chicago probably won’t be bad enough to be picking in a position to trade up for Lawrence. The only way it happens is if Nick Foles’ 2019 season with the Jacksonville Jaguars repeats itself and Mitchell Trubisky remains unable to complete 10-yard passes downfield with any regularity. A cratering in 2020 may end Nagy’s time in Chicago, but the Bears can bounce back with Lawrence.
As with the Detroit Lions, the Bears could take advantage of Aaron Rodgers clearly being on the back nine and Kirk Cousins, who might have his best seasons already behind him. The Bears are loaded with defensive personnel. Though they leave a lot to be desired offensively, Lawrence would provide enough of a spark to be a catalyst for change with these Monsters of the Midway.
