5 NFL teams who are instant contenders with Trevor Lawrence
By John Buhler
The New England Patriots don’t deserve to go from Tom Brady to Trevor Lawrence with only one gap year in between. If Bill Belichick and Josh McDaniels get their hands on the best pro quarterbacking prospect since John Elway, the Evil Empire will be back to ruin everyone else’s postseason dreams for another decade plus. They weren’t dead, they were only hibernating.
Drafting may not be Belichick’s strength as a head coach, but he has plenty of picks to move up to get Lawrence at No. 1 if he feels so inclined. It really depends on how bad the Patriots play this year. If they go 6-10 or 5-11, they’d end up with a top-10 pick and would have the pieces to put together a Godfather offer to the worst team in football. Please don’t take that offer, awful team.
Even if the Patriots stink this year, it won’t be because of the defense. That’s Belichick’s baby, and that side of the ball will stay respectable, even if the offense becomes one of the worst in the league with Jarrett Stidham or Brian Hoyer under center. Add in another offseason of free agency moves and trades with poorly-run teams and the Patriots could be in position to contend again.
Knowing he’ll have a defense and a running game to lean on, the Patriots could have the look of an early 2000s team led by Brady. Though he later became the GOAT, Lawrence coming out of Clemson more closely resembles Drew Bledsoe coming out of Washington State in 1993 than Brady did coming out of Michigan in 2000. If Belichick gets Lawrence, we are all doomed!
