Stockton and Malone’s Utah Jazz

Few 1-2 punches in NBA history have ever been as potent and long-lasting as John Stockton and Karl Malone. From 1985 until 2003, the two were unstoppable together with the Utah Jazz, which is why it’s no surprise Stockton is the NBA’s all-time assists leader and Malone is its second all-time leading scorer.

Those teams had the unfortunate luck of facing Jordan’s Bulls not once, but twice in the Finals, but that’s not all that makes them interesting. Aside from the obvious Stockton-Malone connection, complementary players like Jeff Hornacek, Bryon Russell, Greg Ostertag and Antoine Carr are worth exploring in more depth.

From 1983 until 2003, the Jazz made the playoffs each and every season, yet they could never break through and win a championship. The Bulls proved to be their bane the only two times they reached the Finals, but rivalries with other great ’90s teams like the Rockets, Sonics and Portland Trail Blazers provide plenty of material to show just how difficult the Western Conference was back then.

Throw in Jerry Sloan, those gorgeous purple throwback jerseys and former NBA players giving their thoughts on trying to guard the Stockton-Malone pick-and-roll, and we’d watch the crap out of this documentary.
