4. 1984 Miami Dolphins

The Miami Dolphins are already in the history books as the only undefeated team to ever win the Super Bowl, but they have never won another after repeating in 1973. That could have been avoided if the 1984 edition of the Dolphins finished off what was truly a historic offensive campaign.

Led by second-year quarterback Dan Marino, Miami put together one of the most explosive offenses in football history. The Dolphins scored a whopping 513 points in the regular season as they rolled through the AFC, cruising to a 14-2 record.

Marino also delivered one of the best seasons for a quarterback in football history, setting records for passing yardage (5,084) and touchdowns (48) in a single season. The AFC playoffs were a cakewalk for the Dolphins, who blew out Seattle and Pittsburgh to advance to Super Bowl XIX.

The opposition was the San Francisco 49ers, who had gone 15-1 to set up a heavyweight showdown between Marino and Joe Montana. The game was a flop with the 49ers crushing the Dolphins 38-16.

This game not only ruined a tremendous season for the Dolphins but would also be the only time Marino ever played in a Super Bowl. That disappointment does add some mythos to the fact that this great Miami team doesn’t receive its due since they didn’t finish the job.
