Yes, the Miami Dolphins signed workhorse Jordan Howard (Eagles) in free agency and also orchestrated a deal during this year’s NFL draft to acquire Matt Breida from the San Francisco 49ers. But have general manager Chris Grier and head coach Brian Flores done enough over the last few months to fix the worst running game in the league in 2019?

A year ago, the ‘Fins averaged a paltry 72.3 yards per game rushing. The team managed a not-so-scintillating 1,156 yards on the ground, a total outdone by six players in the league – including Baltimore Ravens’ quarterback and 2019 NFL MVP Lamar Jackson. Miami’s leading rusher was quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick with 243 yards and four touchdowns on 54 attempts. Ouch.

This offseason, the Atlanta Falcons parted ways with former two-time Pro Bowler Devonta Freeman. Injuries limited him to two games in 2018 and in 14 contests a year ago, he averaged a career-low 3.6 yards per carry. But adding him to the mix gives Flores one more experienced option.

Via Spotrac, the Dolphins still have some room to play with when it comes to the salary cap. Adding Freeman at a reduced price would certainly not upset the apple cart. In any case, the team needs to find a reliable ground attack this year if new coordinator Chan Gailey’s offense is going to succeed.
