4. New York Giants free agent targets: Geoff Swaim, tight end

This offseason, the Jacksonville Jaguars opted to part ways with 2019 free-agent pickup tight end Geoff Swaim after only one season with the club. He had signed a two-year, $6.6 million deal with Doug Marrone’s team a year ago. But he wound up playing in only a half-dozen game and snared just 13 passes for 65 yards without reaching the end zone.

But new Giants’ offensive coordinator Jason Garrett, the former Cowboys’ head coach for nine-plus seasons, is more than familiar with this performer. Originally a seventh-round draft choice by Dallas in 2015, the former University of Texas product spent four seasons with Garrett’s club. However, he would appear in only 37 contests (making 18 starts). It’s interesting to note that while he was targeted only 43 times, he caught 35 passes for 336 yards albeit one touchdown.

Of course, the Giants did use a first-round draft choice in 2017 on tight end Evan Engram. But in three NFL seasons, he has yet to play in all 16 games. A year ago, he missed exactly half the year but to his credit, he did catch 44 passes for 467 yards and three scores in his eight appearances. The team currently has seven tight ends on the roster, including 2020 veteran addition Levine Toilolo. But at the very least, Swaim knows how Garrett thinks.
