New Orleans Saints x-factor: Drew Brees

This is a case of stating the obvious, but the most important player for the New Orleans Saints in 2020 is quarterback Drew Brees. The Saints will only go as far as Brees takes them and there are questions about how much he has left in the tank.

Brees’ stats were strong again in 2019, but he did miss five games with a thumb injury. New Orleans did go 5-0 without Brees and the conventional wisdom was that the in-season break would ensure that he was fresh for the playoffs.

That didn’t happen as Brees looked a bit tired down the stretch. There are also significant questions about how much arm strength he has left when the Saints opted to go to Taysom Hill for a Hail Mary attempt in their playoff loss to the Minnesota Vikings.

This could be Brees’ final season and he needs to deliver another great performance to help the Saints win another Super Bowl title. A second ring could truly re-define Brees’ legacy and he is unquestionably the most important player that New Orleans needs to be great in 2020.
