Minnesota Vikings all-time Mount Rushmore
Minnesota Vikings Mount Rushmore: QB Fran Tarkenton
His constant on-the-move style frustrated a slew of defense of players, including Pro Football Hall of Famers such as Deacon Jones and Merlin Olsen. And for many years, quarterback Fran Tarkenton owned the top passing records in the history of the NFL.
A second-round draft pick from the University of Georgia in 1961, he played six seasons with the team before being dealt to the New York Giants. After five years with that club, it was back to the Twin Cities and onto his best days.
He spearheaded the Vikings’ three Super Bowl appearances in four years during the decade of the ‘70s. Of course, the club ran into its share of problems in those games, albeit against some of the better teams in league history.
Tarkington took a lot of heat for those losses and understandably so considering in his three appearances on Super Sunday, the team totaled a combined 27 points in losses to the Dolphins, Steelers and Raiders, respectively.

Tarkenton is one of 12 players in NFL history to throw at least 300 TD passes. A total of 239 of his 342 aerial scores came with the Vikings, a franchise record. And his 33,098 passing yards with the Purple Gang is a team mark as well.
