Should Chicago Bears tank for Trevor Lawrence or sign Cam Newton in 2021?
By John Buhler
Chicago Bears decision depends on pride in the front office
Ultimately, this comes down to what the Bears organization’s plans are for Pace and Nagy beyond this year. If they win with Foles, keep winning with Foles and look hard at guys like Howell, Slovis or Daniels who could come out in 2022. If they don’t win with Foles, they need to beg ownership to give them another chance like Bob Quinn and Matt Patricia did with the Lions last year.
Simply put, Pace and Nagy can’t bring Newton into the building now because they made their bed and will now have to lie in it. Stand by your decision to go with Foles over Newton and sink or swim with that logic. You’re not allowed to sign Newton in 2021 because all it will do is expose you as a collection of incompetent fools who shouldn’t have a seat in the big chair to begin with.
But if ownership cleans house to bring a new head coach and general manager pairing, they can do whatever they want. If they want to give up the farm to draft Lawrence No. 1 overall, so be it. If they want to sign Newton as a high-priced stop-gap starter for 2021 in addition to drafting Lawrence, the new regime is welcomed to do that as well. They’d have a clean slate to work with.
Winning is a panacea, but not if you want Lawrence or Newton on your team in 2021.
