4 dream trade scenarios for the Kansas City Chiefs
Kansas City Chiefs trade: Joe Looney comes from Dallas
Despite signing him to a free agent contract this year, Joe Looney is far from a guarantee to make the Dallas Cowboys’ final roster. The former starting center could get beat out by one of the team’s recent draft picks for the job, either 2019 selection Connor McGovern or 2020 pick Tyler Biadasz.
Kansas City has incumbent starter Austin Reiter under contract for 2020, but the cash-strapped Chiefs could save over $3.4 million against the cap by cutting him. Looney’s new contract with Dallas pays him only $2.3 million in 2020, freeing up about $1 million in space for Kansas City, and every little bit helps.
Looney, too, would be an upgrade over Reiter. The Chiefs could cut Reiter and let second year man Nick Allegretti and 2020 undrafted free agent Darryl Williams battle for the starting job, but this opportunity is better for the 2020 team, and redshirting Williams may be the best move for his career long-term.
There seems to be very little chance that O’Daniel turns it around in defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo’s system. As such, he’s a likely cut-candidate this August. Getting anything in return especially an upgrade, would be a win for Veach.
