Best Madden players of all time: Barry Sanders, RB, Detroit Lions

No longer do the Madden game developers rate players higher than 99. However, in the early days, players could receive ratings of 100. The ultimate compliment.

In Madden 1999, one of the most dynamic, elusive, and unfair running backs was given the 100 rating. Barry Sanders.

Sanders won the cover vote for the Madden 25 edition in 2014 as fans paid homage to one of the best players in Madden history. He had a 99 rating on this edition, and players could tear up defenses with him on the Madden All-25 team, which celebrated the best players in franchise history up to that point.

Sanders made real life look like a video game sometimes, so imagine how fun it was to play with him in an actual video game in Madden 1999. He could juke any defender and it was game over for your opponent if you broke free in the open field.

Playing against him probably led to your friends smashing a few controllers because there was no answer to containing Sanders in this game.

This version of Sanders was shifty, and once he was by you, he was gone. Like most players on this list, the game developers bring these players back each year in Ultimate Team. Sanders was dominant with the game mechanics in 1999. Today, with the in-game physics, he is also unfair.

Sanders was one of the first unstoppable running backs this franchise had, and his 100 rating in Madden 1999 reflects that.
