5 overrated NCAA basketball teams that won’t be as good as you think next season
1. Most overrated NCAA basketball teams: Villanova: FanSided Rank: No. 2
This will probably be the most controversial overrated designation on this list and could be patently unreasonable when reviewed next March. On paper, Villanova is scary good, has an experienced team with most of its important pieces returning, and is led by an exceptional college basketball coach in Jay Wright, whose elevation of the Villanova program to consistent national prominence over the last two decades has been a job very well done.
The only major loss from last year’s team, which finished 24-7 and top-15 in adjusted offensive efficiency according to KenPom, is likely to be Saddiq Bey, the Wildcats’ leading scorer from last year, and probably first-round NBA draft pick. The coffers were augmented by the announced return of rising sophomore forward Jeremiah Robinson-Earl, Villanova’s leading rebounder whose return to the Wildcats will likely bring about a breakout season alongside a talented returning group including Collin Gillespie, Justin Moore and Jermaine Samuels.
Further, one of last year’s highly touted freshmen Bryan Antoine appears to be healthy after an injury-plagued campaign to start his Villanova career. And Villanova added Tulane-transfer Caleb Daniels, the junior guard who led Tulane in scoring in 2018-2019 and sat out last season per NCAA transfer rules.
I almost just talked myself out of this, but alas, I must commit to the bit. Villanova is a sure-fire top-10 team. But our rankings have them second, and much of the college hoops cognoscenti have them first or second. In my own personal rankings, they’re probably the fifth or sixth best team right now, and so yes, I think the 2020-2021 Villanova Wildcats are a bit overrated.
