Fantasy football: Five quarterbacks who were helped most this offseason
By Brian Towne
NFC quarterbacks
Tampa Bay Buccaneers, QB Tom Brady
Additions: RB Ke’Shawn Vaughn, WR Tyler Johnson, TE Rob Gronkowski
If Tampa had anyone under center other than Tom Brady, they would not be on this list. The Bucs had two WRs, Mike Evans and Chris Godwin finish in the top ten at their position in fantasy last year. The returning TE’s (OJ Howard & Cameron Brate) are more than competent. Even with the returning weapons, what makes the new additions stand out is how well they appear to fit Tom Brady’s skill set. His rapport with Gronk, 78 TD’s in nine seasons, is obvious. The two rookies, Vaughn & Johnson, were drafted to fill roles that Brady expertly utilized with the Patriots. Johnson is the projected slot receiver, while Vaughn will have a chance to be the 3rd down back, if not the every down back.
Verdict: Fantasy owners will reach for Brady because he finally has the elite weapons he’s lacked for years.
Seattle Seahawks, Russell Wilson
Additions: RB Carlos Hyde, WR Phillip Dorsett, TE Greg Olsen
Olsen has plenty of experience making plays for a mobile QB. Hopefully, he can stay healthy, something he and Seahawk TE’s failed to do in 2019. After a surprising rebound season with the Houston Texans, Hyde provides insurance at the RB position after the ACL injury to Rashaad Penny. WRs Tyler Lockett and DK Metcalf each performed better than expected, and remain ascending players. Dorsett is another vertical threat for Russ, who throws the best deep ball in the league. Wilson has openly lobbied for the signing of Antonio Brown. It seems unlikely to happen, though if it does, Wilson would increase his already high fantasy value.
Verdict: Wilson will have another top 5 fantasy season among Quarterbacks.
Philadelphia Eagles, QB Carson Wentz
Additions: WR Jalen Reagor, WR Marquise Goodwin, WR John Hightower, WR Quez Watkins
Unlike all of the others on this list, all of the Eagles additions are at one position. Even though the top two wideouts, Alshon Jeffery & Desean Jackson are expected to return, depth was badly needed. Speedy vet Marquise Goodwinn and three draft picks, including 1st rounder Reagor give Wentz a full compliment of options. Zach Ertz is a top 3 TE and backup Dallas Goddert was a borderline TE1 last season. RB Miles Sanders came on as a nice option in passing game as the season went on, getting 23 receptions in the last 5 games. If just one of these new receivers emerges as a respectable, cog in the offense, it could signal a marked improvement over 2019.
Verdict: A healthy offense should make Wentz an undervalued option in fantasy.
