Washington Redskins all-time Mount Rushmore
Washington Redskins Mount Rushmore: CB Darrell Green
He was the final pick in the first round of the 1983 NFL Draft by the then-defending Super Bowl champion Washington Redskins. While that year was known for its quarterback class that included superstars John Elway, Jim Kelly and Dan Marino, there were four other future Hall of Famers selected that day in running back Eric Dickerson, tackle Jimbo Covert (part of the Class of 2020), versatile offensive lineman Bruce Matthews and of course, speedy cornerback Darrell Green with the 28th overall choice.
The latter played 20 years for the franchise, a total of 295 regular-season contests, and picked off 54 passes – returning six of those thefts for score. His final year in the NFL was 2002 and it marked the only campaign during his impressive career that he not record an interception. He was part of three Super Bowl teams, two of which came away with a Lombardi Trophy in 1987 (XXII) and ’91 (XXVI).
Green opened eyes in his very first NFL game. In a Monday night clash with the Dallas Cowboys at RFK Stadium, Tony Dorsett appeared to be on his way to the end zone on a long run. But the former Texas A&M-Kingsville product caught the fellow future Hall of Famer from behind and a star was born.
