3. The Lakers have excellent rim protection

Preventing easy baskets is a staple of any good postseason defense. The Lakers have a solid group of big men who can protect the rim at an above-average level.

No matter what position Davis plays in the frontcourt, he still comfortably profiles as a good shot-blocker. Several role guys give the Lakers even more in that department though.

Dwight Howard shouldn’t see the ball on offense in the post, but he still can block shots and rebound at a high level. He may not close games in the postseason, but he can discourage rim runs for the first three quarters. The Lakers can benefit greatly from getting off to good defensive starts.

Even JaVale McGree might factor into Vogel’s defense against certain opponents. Most of his value comes as a rim-runner on offense, but he’s got the length and athleticism required to keep offensive players from getting to the basket. Don’t be surprised if McGee becomes an important weapon in certain matchups.

The pandemic-induced layoff might decrease the quality of jump shooting in this year’s playoffs. That will cause teams to drive more to the basket than ever before. The Lakers have the big men to excel against that offensive strategy.
