Tottenham question No. 2: Which attackers deserve to be in the starting XI?

Tottenham certainly haven’t been a prolific scoring machine during Mourinho’s tenure. Losing both Harry Kane and Heung-Min Son to injury cost him any chance of outscoring opponents on a regular basis.

Both players should be fit and firing when the season restarts. Both will be in Tottenham’s starting XI anytime they’re fit. The question Mourinho must answer is who else will join them in the attack.

Part of that depends on what system Spurs choose to employ moving forward. Mourinho has been partial to a 4-2-3-1 this season but rumors persist that he wants to transition to a 4-3-3. The smart bet is that any significant tactical shift will need to wait until the summer. That means they’re four attacking spots up for grab at the moment.

Kane and Son take two of those, which leaves two remaining for the rest of the squad. Dele Alli may not been in the best form of his career, but his talent level and willingness to do whatever Mourinho asks of him will put him in the starting Xi as well. That leaves only one spot to fill.

Steven Bergwijn was purchased by Spurs to be a key player. He looked good upon his arrival in January before going down with an injury of his own. Look for him to get the last spot. That will leave the likes of Lucas Moura and Erik Lamela on the bench. It will be interesting to see if Mourinho can identify a first choice four that he’ll be completely satisfied with heading into next season.
