5 reasons the Cowboys will win the NFC East
2. Mike McCarthy will be an upgrade over Jason Garrett
Lots of Cowboys fans wanted the team to hire a young, offensive guru to take over for Jason Garrett. Instead, the franchise chose to play things safe and go with an established veteran. McCarthy may not have a ton of upside, but he’s going to be a clear upgrade over Garrett in 2020.

First and foremost, he should bring a new sense of innovation to the team’s offensive system. Garret arrived in Dallas with a reputation of being a sharp, offensive mind, but the results never backed that out once he became the team’s head coach. At worst, McCarthy can bring some helpful new ideas to a system that’s gotten pretty stale.
McCarthy’s biggest impact might be felt with his ability to make in-game decisions. Garrett frequently looked helpless when his team needed him to make a big decision that might tip a game in their favor. McCarthy will give the team a big boost in that regard.
The Cowboys will also enjoy being freed from scrutiny about their head coach’s job status in 2020. Barring an epic collapse, McCarthy is going to get a season or two to make the changes he feels are necessary in Dallas. That should allow a sense of calm to wash over the franchise in times of trouble.
