3. Jason Garrett to the rescue?

During his rookie endeavors, Jones played under head coach Pat Shurmur and offensive coordinator Mike Shula. This year, he will learn a new system after new head coach Joe Judge brought in Jason Garrett to be the team’s offensive coordinator.

Garrett received a lot of criticism during his days as the head coach of the Dallas Cowboys, specifically for his inability to get the team to take the next step. For years, it felt as though the Cowboys were stuck in an idle position.

One major plus to Garrett’s time with the Cowboys was offensive competence and ability to develop a young quarterback named Dak Prescott. Say what you want about his head coaching capabilities, but the work he did with Prescott should excite fans.

Prescott was drafted 135th overall during the fourth round of the 2016 NFL Draft. Under Garrett, he flourished quickly and has shaped himself into one of the best quarterbacks in the league. He went 40-24-0, 1-2 in the playoffs, in four years with Garrett. He made two Pro Bowls and threw for an average of just around 3,944 yards a season, with slightly more than 24 touchdown throws.

Last year was Prescott’s best season, and he has shown progression each year. Now, he is 26 years old entering his prime.

Of course, giving Garrett all the credit for Prescott’s development would be false and unfair. But he is due his own share of the credit too.

There has been an ample number of young signal callers drafted early who have fallen out of the NFL due to poor coaching. Garrett has demonstrated a propensity to help bring these quarterbacks around and develop them. Ironically, Prescott’s success under Garrett should be a sign of delight for Jones and Giants fans.
