Potential Jack Eichel suitor: Edmonton Oilers

The Oilers took Connor McDavid first overall in the 2015 draft, then the Sabres took Eichel No. 2. Neither organization has been a picture of high function, but the Oilers are in the playoffs this year for the second time in McDavid’s career while Eichel remains out of the postseason and openly frustrated.

Leon Draisaitl has become a worthy co-star to McDavid, if not a superstar in his own right as the league’s leading scorer this year. But scoring depth is still a thing for Edmonton, as the top scoring duo on the league (literally the top two point scorers in the NHL) accounting for 77 of their 223 goals and 207 of 604 points (goals and assists).

Ryan Nugent-Hopkins was having the best season of his career before the league was shut down, with 61 points in 65 games. From Dec. 31 through when the season was stopped, he was the fifth-most productive forward in the league with 41 points in his last 30 games. The Oilers went 17-8-5 in those games. He has become an important player for the Oilers, even if the idea he’ll be a star is long gone.

That being said, the chance to add Eichel can’t be shied away from and Ken Holland should be willing to make an offer along these lines.
