2. Kentucky questions: Can Davion Mintz step up as Kentucky’s leader?

While Sarr is still waiting to find out if he will be eligible to play, former Creighton star Davion Mintz won’t have that issue. Mintz, who missed last season due to an ankle injury, transferred to Kentucky and is immediately eligible as a grad transfer.

Following in the footsteps of Nate Sestina and Reid Travis, Mintz is the third straight grad transfer to finish his career at Kentucky. Mintz was a solid role player over his first three seasons at Creighton, proving to be a solid three-point shooter and willing defender.

While Kentucky could certainly use those qualities from Mintz, his most important role will be as the team’s leader. Since Calipari’s young players rarely make it to their junior and senior years he has been using the grad transfer route to establish some leadership on this team.

Mintz has certainly been through his fair share of wars in college basketball as a member of the Bluejays. Playing in the rough-and-tumble Big East has also provided plenty of experience for Mintz that a lot of his new teammates simply don’t have.

Adding Mintz to the locker room gives the younger players someone to look up to for guidance over the course of the long season. Kentucky simply has to get the kind of leadership out of Mintz that will allow the young players to reach their full potential.
