Tennessee football may wear black jerseys in a game and auction them off for charity with the proceeds going to Black Lives Matter.

Tennessee football has a great idea to bring more awareness to Black Lives Matter.

During a Zoom call with the Tennessee football media on Thursday morning, Volunteers head coach Jeremy Pruitt said, “Tennessee plans wear black jerseys against Kentucky this fall and then auction the uniforms after the game to raise money for Black Lives Matter.”

The Tennessee Volunteers are slated to play the SEC East rival Kentucky Wildcats at Neyland Stadium in Knoxville on Nov. 7. Though the Vols have five home games before the rivalry game with Kentucky, it is interesting that it’s the first home game in November for Tennessee football during an election year. It could be a very powerful message if Tennessee does pull this off.

Jeremy Pruitt says Tennessee plans to wear black jerseys vs. Kentucky.

Another reason Tennessee could be planning to wear black jerseys instead of their typical orange is that it’s a meaningful game and one the Vols will probably win. If they were to get blown out at home by the Florida Gators or the Alabama Crimson Tide, these auctioned off black jerseys to support Black Lives Matter wouldn’t generate as much interest if it came after a losing effort.

There could be other programs in the country that do something like this, but it’s great to see Pruitt and the Tennessee football to think about the little positive things they can do to bring awareness to such an important cause. One of these jerseys could be quite the keepsake for a Tennessee diehard, as well as someone who wants to see more positive changes in the world.

Besides this Kentucky date coming in the weeks leading up to the 2020 Presidential Election, it’s also pretty cool Tennessee isn’t opting to do this the first weekend it can. Black Lives Matter isn’t just something we do in the immediate present, it’s something we need to extend to bridge towards a better future.
