The Bundesliga season enters its penultimate weekend with Bayern Munich hosting Freiburg at the Allianz Arena. Bayern are celebrating their eighth straight league title after beating Werder Bremen last weekend. Freiburg are chasing a spot in the Europa Leauge next season and enter the weekend in eighth place.
Bayern have won 11 straight Bundesliga games and are unbeaten in 18 games. While Bayern could take their foot off the gas after winning the Bundesliga title, it is unlikely they will. Bayern will face a long layoff between the DFB Pokal final and the start of the Champions League and will use every game possible as a way to prepare for Europe’s most important competition.
Manager Hans-Dieter Flick will have to make one change to his lineup on Saturday after Alphonso Davies was sent off following his second yellow card against Werder. Bayern only have one other left-back on their roster, David Alaba. However, Alaba has spent most of the season playing center-back. Flick will likely move Alaba back to left-back for one game and allow Lucas Hernandez or Niklas Sule the chance to start next to Jerome Boateng at center-back. With Sule recently returning to training following an injury, Saturday would be a great chance to get him some playing time.
Freiburg are one point behind Hoffenheim and Wolfsburg as they chase a spot in the Europa League. Manager Christian Streich’s team will have to past one of those teams in the table if they are going to qualify for Europe. A loss on Saturday could end Freiburg’s Europa League dreams if Hoffenheim and Wolfsburg win their games. Freiburg have seven points in their last three games. Former Bayern striker Nils Petersen leads the club with 11 goals this season and will be the key to Freiburg’s chances of winning on Saturday.
