NBA Mock Draft 5.0: How high can Obi Toppin fly?
By Ian Levy
The Kings are getting very lucky in this hypothetical, landing the prospect ranked ninth on our last Big Board and eighth on Sam Vecenie’s. Vassell is a high-level 3-and-D prospect who hit 41.7 percent of 168 college 3-point attempts and is very comfortable spotting up and move without the ball. On defense, his effort and awareness were elevated by his length (6-foot-10 wingspan) making him useful as a team-defender and highly versatile. There may even be some potential for him to grow into more of a complementary creator role as well.
The Kings have plenty of pieces in place but things are getting expensive quickly for a young team that hasn’t yet solidified itself as a playoff contender. If the Kings can’t coax back Bogdan Bogdanovic or decide they’d like to explore moving Buddy Hield or Harrison Barnes in the next year or two, Vassell could be an excellent and much more cost-effective replacement.
