Pick Analysis. North. Pittsburgh Steelers. 2. 55. Scouting Report. AFC. player

While the opportunity to start may not have been there, the Pittsburgh Steelers would have been better served by bringing in Newton this offseason than holding steady at the quarterback position. It might be Ben Roethlisberger‘s team, but like Newton, he played a grand total of two games last season for the Steelers. It was a lot of Mason Rudolph and Devlin Hodges in 2019.

If Roethlisberger plays decently, Pittsburgh might be able to challenge the Baltimore Ravens in the AFC North because this looks to be the best Steelers we’ve seen in a decade. However, if he gets hurt again and the future Pro Football Hall of Famer doesn’t have it anymore, Rudolph and Hodges will just be 21st century versions of Bubby Brister in Pittsburgh. That means no Super Bowls.

Besides a natural succession plan from Roethlisberger to Newton, the reason Newton would have been such a phenomenal fit in Pittsburgh is his NFL quarterbacking prototype coming out of Auburn was Roethlisberger. We’re talking about giant humans who can scramble, throw the ball anywhere on the field from any arm angle and are as tough as they come at the position.

If the Steelers added Newton, it may not have changed their upward trajectory for this season. Pittsburgh still feels like a top-half team in the AFC regardless of if Newton joined their team or not. However, the future looks pretty bleak in the Steel City if Roethlisberger is more cooked than we think. Steelers fans better start watching some Jamie Newman highlights to ease the pain.
