5 reasons Baker Mayfield will turn it around in 2020
By John Buhler
1. Kevin Stefanski is not Freddie Kitchens
Congratulations, Browns! You finally have adults in the building! By upgrading at general manager and massively upgrading at head coach, your excellent roster finally has a chance to be excellent on the field. Though Andrew Berry over John Dorsey remains to be seen if it is truly an upgrade, Kevin Stefanski over Freddie Kitchens is an upgrade even if Stefanski becomes Pat Shurmur.
Kitchens may have been a good position coach and a great quarterback at his alma mater in the SEC, but he was so over his skis in the big chair in Cleveland, it was nothing short of a clown show. Stefanski brings a polish, professionalism, and a proven track record as an offensive-minded coach that leads us to believe he’ll be a success in Cleveland. Mayfield is a huge beneficiary here.
Stefanski won with a lot of guys with the Minnesota Vikings. The most talented quarterback he worked with was Kirk Cousins, and even he was an overachiever coming out of Michigan State. Whether it was Cousins, Case Keenum, Sam Bradford, Teddy Bridgewater, or Christian Freaking Ponder, Stefanski was able to help the Vikings win a ton of games over the last decade-plus.
You can believe as much in this Mayfield/Stefanski partnership as you want. It could be something special, or it could just be something okay. Either way, it’s not going to be the hopeless grease fire we saw a year ago with Kitchens as head coach. It’s hard to live in a house when it’s always on fire. Stefanski may be good or bad, but we know he won’t leave the stove on before he goes to sleep.
