10 NFL players who are regression candidates in 2020
Goff already took a step back last year as the Los Angeles Rams missed the playoffs following their Super Bowl LIII defeat to the Patriots at the end of a glistening 2018 campaign.
He threw the ball 65 more times than in 2018 but his completion percentage dropped from 64.9 to 62.9, his yards from 4,688 to 4,638 and his touchdowns from 32 to 22.
Those dips may be representative of the wider problems of the Los Angeles offense but what was not was Goff’s interception total, which rose from 12 in 2018 to 16 in 2019.
His increased carelessness with the football may lead to Sean McVay looking more towards the run and such thinking was hinted at when the Rams took Cam Akers in the second round of the draft.
The combination of Akers and Darrell Henderson will be tasked with doing what the ailing Todd Gurley could not last year – giving the Rams a ground game effective enough to set up the play-action that is such a pivotal part of McVay’s offense.
Goff’s passing attempts, therefore, look destined to drop back to 2018 levels. If he cannot cut out the turnovers and fails to rediscover the efficiency he displayed two seasons ago, 2020 will be another year that calls the massive extension to which the Rams signed him into question.
