USC football questions: 1. Is this the end for Clay Helton?

We can talk all day about the individual aspects of the Trojans roster that will make or break USC football in the 2020 season. But when you get down to it, the one thing that hangs over this team and program coming into the year and will continue to do so throughout the year is if this is going to be the final campaign with Clay Helton manning the sidelines.

As we’ve discussed, when you look at every level on both sides of the ball for this team, they are capable of competing with anyone. Sure, they may struggle in their season-opener against title-contending Alabama but the Trojans have more than enough talent to compete to win the Pac-12 and perhaps finish the year as a top-10 team.

Raw talent, however, has never been the issue for this team. Despite the fact that the Trojans haven’t been what they once were of late, the prestige of the program still allows them to bring in some big-name recruits. It’s been Helton and his turned-over staffs that have been unable to get the players to gel and, ultimately win games.

Helton is out of excuses at this point, however. This may be the best quarterback, best overall roster and best opportunity for USC football to truly bounce back in the 2020 season. So if they don’t, there’s almost no escaping the formality that the head coach will be sent packing.
