Life since the restart has certainly been good for Atletico Madrid. They’ve gone from being one of many contenders for Champions League qualification to strong favorites. The revised, truncated format for this season’s UCL would seem to favor a team such as Atletico that prizes defensive durability above all else.
The fact remains, though, that it’s been more of the same from Diego Simeone’s side this term. These wins have invariably been ground out, the style of play yet again far more functional than entertaining. Atleti can be beguiling at times, but those instances tend to be isolated rather than sustained.
Meanwhile, Mallorca looked doomed just a week ago. But a 5-1 trouncing of fellow relegation strugglers Celta Vigo on Tuesday means that five teams lie within seven points of them with 15 points left to play for.
