4. Washington Red Tails or Red Hawks

A Reddit user proposed the idea of the Washington Redtails nickname, and it seems to fit. Making it two words, “Red Tails” could work too.

“Anyone else feel its time for the Redskins to change their name?” Reddit user RO16 wrote. “The Redtails were a unit of black fighter pilots in WWII back when the military was still segregated. Redtails even works with the fight song, just change “braves” to “men.”

As alluded to, Redtails is a nod to a unit of black fighter pilots during World War II in a segregated military. The logo design shared by Reddit user RO16 keeps the burgundy and gold colors, with a fighter plane as the center of the logo. A tie to Washington and the D.C. area specifically is a little strained, but if nothing else Redtails is a cool and unique nickname.

Another nickname along the “Red” line but not offensive?, is Red Hawks or Redhawks. The burgundy and gold can be retained again, with a menacing-looking bird logo on the side of the helmets. Moving to a bird nickname may not seem ideal, with a desire to not copy the division rival Philadelphia Eagles in some way, but all options have to be in play. Another bird nickname possibility would be the Washington Griffins.
